April 21, 2023 – The ICLMG is appalled at the guilty verdict against Dr. Hassan Diab by the French court announced today. We send our love and solidarity to Dr. Diab and his family on this terrible day and we commit to continue to fight for justice to prevail.
Dr. Diab was sentenced to life in prison and France has issued a warrant for his arrest. The Canadian government must act now to ensure he does not face a second extradition to injustice!
Dr. Diab’s kafkaesque nightmare should have ended in January 2018 when French investigative judges ordered his release from prison in Paris, finding there was unequivocal evidence that he was in Lebanon at the time of the bombing and that the other evidence in the case did not meet the bar of proceeding to trial. No new evidence was presented during this latest hearing, which instead relied on the old, previously rejected or discredited “evidence”; it was an unfair trial bent on finding a scapegoat in this 40-year-old case.
The reliance by French prosecutors on secret, unsourced intelligence that may be the product of torture once again demonstrates how the fight against terrorism is instrumentalized to violate fundamental principles of justice and human rights.
Prime Minister Trudeau stated in 2018 that “what happened to Hassan Diab never should have happened” and promised to “make sure that this never happens again.”
Canada must make it absolutely clear that no second request for the extradition of Dr. Diab will be accepted. There must be no further miscarriage of justice!
